565: Beyond Visibility: Turning Logistics Data Into Landed Cost Savings, with Gnosis Freight
Michael Rentz, Chief Revenue Officer at Gnosis Freight, brings experience from the South Carolina Ports Authority and a supply chain accelerator. He advocates for a fundamental mindset shift, viewing logistics not as a cost center but as a strategic driver for growth that can directly improve margins. Rentz believes that by connecting granular operational data to financial outcomes, companies can uncover hidden costs and empower their teams. He explains Gnosis Freight's outcome-first approach, which uses data science and tooling to solve specific problems, reduce freight spend, and enable logistics teams to move from a defensive to an offensive, value-driving posture.

Today I’m joined by an industry leader in Container Lifecycle Management: Gnosis Freight.
Gnosis Freight is an AI-native global freight operating system built for execution, enabling enterprise shippers and logistics providers to automate the end-to-end containerized freight lifecycle across ocean, port, rail, and inland transportation.
Today, Michael Rentz, Chief Revenue Officer at Gnosis, joins me to talk all about moving beyond visibility to turn logistics data into cost savings. We’ll be shining a light on where organizations are quietly losing money, identifying the data you need, and turning insight into action. Plus, we’ll be exploring what happens when you start to view logistics data through a P&L lens, and how to prove that your data is delivering a real financial return.
Guest bio:
Michael is the Chief Revenue Officer at Gnosis Freight. He joined the company in the Summer of 2020. Before joining Gnosis, he got his start in the industry with the South Carolina Ports Authority and Maersk. He left Maersk in 2018 to pursue his own endeavors, which eventually led him back to Charleston, SC, where he worked for Techstars in an attempt to stand up the first-ever Supply Chain and Logistics Accelerator. The pandemic put an unexpected halt to that, and it was then that he fortuitously met Austin McCombs (CEO/Founder of Gnosis) and Jake Hoffman (CTO of Gnosis).
Why logistics technology is still treated as a cost center, rather than something that can directly improve margin, and how to make that shift.
What changes when a supply chain leader starts looking at logistics data through a P&L lens rather than an operational one.
Where companies are typically losing money in their logistics operations.
How you connect operational events – like a delayed container, missed free time, or an inefficient dray move – to their actual impact on landed cost, the value of data, and the problem with the ‘flaw of averages.’
How, from documentation to communication, small operational issues can easily multiply to become significant margin problems.
Why we need to think differently about KPIs and budgets if we’re going to see supply chain as a value driver not a cost center, and where team priorities fit in.
How better data can help resolve invoice errors and help companies identify and recover money they’re currently leaving on the table.
The key metrics you should put in front of a CFO to prove that better logistics data is delivering a real financial return, and how Gnosis helps customers, through data science, tooling, and service, with an outcome-first approach.
Finding the balance between AI and tribal knowledge, why it’s important to think about how dynamic your data really is, and why context is critical.
